Steam Road Rollers
The Roller although not strictly a traction engine is probably the best known of
all of the machines which are known under that general term. Even today diesel
rollers are often still referred to at Steam Rollers. The roller has been
indispensable in improving the roads that we all use today. The first roller was
constructed in its normal form in 1865 when Thomas Aveling produced a traction
engine with smooth wheels. Progress in design was rapid and within ten years or
so the normal design of one front roll and two rear that we are used to became
the norm. Compound cylinders were also introduced but the single cylinder
version was the firm favourite of contractors. The weight of the early rollers
tended to be much heavier than the normal weight that we are used to. As road
building techniques improved the 8 to 10 ton weight became the standard although
some lightweight models also became popular.
